In the beginning of the year, Meyer represented the Stellenbosch University’s rugby team Maties in the Varsity Cup competition. He was a part of six of their seven games and scored a goal in their narrow loss to the eventual winners UFS Shimlas, but could not get Maties to make it through to the semi- finals and the three-time champions finished in fifth position.

Meyer is a native of Cape Town and attended Paul Roos Gymnasium in nearby Stellenbosch. He did not get an official provincial call-up to Western Province during his school time and then relocated from Durban for the Sharks after completing his school. He was selected as the reserve player for all 13 matches of Sharks U19’s games during the 2012 Provincial Championships for Under-19 and scored a goal in their victory of 46-3 against South West District U19s and scoring two tries in their final game during the season regular, which was a win of 47-45 against The Leopards U19s. The Sharks came in third to make it to the semi-finals, but fell to Blue Bulls U19s. Blue Bulls U19s.
Meyer returned home to Cape Town to join the Western Province U21 team for their Provincial Championships for Under-21s. He started six games and made four appearances as a substitute during the regular season. He also scoring a goal in their victory of 39-18 against Free State U21 to help his team top the league. He scored the 29-22 win against the same opponent in the semi-finals, and then in the final, he was as the winner after Western Province beat the Blue Bulls 33-26 in Cape Town.
Meyer was included in the Sharks XV squad for the 2016 Currie Cup qualification series and he made his first class debut at the end of April 2016, coming on as a replacement in their 48–18 victory over Namibian side the Welwitschias in Umlazi. He made a further four appearances for the team as they finished in tenth place on the log. He was also included in the Sharks squad for the Currie Cup Premier Division, and he made his debut at that level in a 46–24 victory over Griquas in Round Two of the competition. He remained in the matchday squad for the remainder of the competition, making a further six appearances, which included his first senior start in their 53–0 victory over the Eastern Province Kings. Despite being in the top two on the log for the majority of the series, a defeat to the Golden Lions in the final round of the season saw the Sharks drop out of the top four altogether, finishing in fifth place and missing out on a semi-final spot.
