The summer of 2005 saw Leeds United appointed Carver as their first-team coach in place of the departing Adrian Boothroyd who left the club to become Watford’s new coach. He was thereby reunited with an old friend from Newcastle United, since Paul Winsper had been hired in January as strength and conditioning coach.

Carver is best known for his association with Newcastle United, having held assistant coaching roles under Bobby Robson and Alan Pardew, and was the interim manager following Pardew’s departure. Away from Newcastle, he was also assistant coach to Kevin Blackwell at Leeds United and Luton Town, as well as at Plymouth Argyle under Paul Mariner. As manager, he took charge of Toronto FC from 2008 to 2009 and Omonia from 2016 to 2017.

Carver was assistant manager of Bobby Robson at Newcastle United. After Robson’s dismissal in August of 2004, Carver was appointed interim manager. He steered Newcastle United to a victory of 3-0 against Blackburn Rovers. Carver later declared the victory in honour of Robson. Despite his win, Carver was not considered as a candidate for the permanent position the job was awarded the way of Graeme Souness who opted to hire his own staff for backroom operations; Carver quit his club at the end of September.

Carver was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, and was raised in Cruddas Park. Carver was a member of Montagu as well as North Fenham Boys Club when at the age of nine. This led to him being drafted by his local Newcastle United club Newcastle United, as an apprentice when he turned 16. He signed an official contract with Newcastle United in January 1983 , but was not able to make his debut as a player after which he was released in 1985.

Carver was then a player in Cardiff City, making 13 appearances and a thigh strain put him out of the game at 20 years old. After that Carver played semi- professional football for Gateshead from 1987 until 1990. Carver left Leeds on 23 October 2006, with David Geddis briefly taking charge of caretaker duties.
