Joe Acanfora is one of the most popular and richest Lgbt Rights Activist who was born on July 6, 1950 in Jersey City, United States. Joseph Acanfora, III was born in 1950 to Leonore and Joseph Acanfora, II. In the early age of 5, Acanfora and his family relocated to Jersey City to Brick Town, NJ. Acanfora is the youngest of three children and has a sister who was born in 1961 , and another sister born in 1964. When he was a child, Acanfora was interested in the weather. This curiosity grew into a fascination for meteorology. His mother told him his mother that he “…once tried eating chicken wings in order to fly to the skies and observe them from in close-up.” This fascination was also inspired by Acanfora’s seventh-grade science teacher who was an ex- Navy meteorologist. Acanfora was valedictorian in his class at Brick Township High School, located in Brick Township, New Jersey in the year 1968.

On September 22 1972, Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Pittenger announced an event in the press to announce that he had made the decision to officially certify Acanfora. The following weekend it was reported that an New York Times article from September 24 as well as an article in the Washington Evening Star-News that appeared on September 23 discussed on the announcement of Acanfora’s Pennsylvania Secretary of Education and reported that Acanfora was at the time instructing within Montgomery County, Maryland.

On May 19, 1972, Acanfora was interviewed by a personnel specialist in the Department of Personnel for Montgomery County Public Schools. Following the interview, the personnel specialist filled out an “interview and recruitment form” which is a standard part of each applicant’s file. Acanfora was rated above average in each of the seven categories contained on the form (appearance, personality, verbal expression, knowledge of subject area, enthusiasm for teaching, references, and scholarship). In the “comments” section, the interviewer described Acanfora as “an above average earth science applicant.” However, the interviewer had acquired a subjective “gut feeling” during the interview that Acanfora might be a homosexual, and so he added the following comment on the form: “Principal must interview before contracting; reservations.”

In April 1972, Acanfora applied for employment with the Board of Education of Montgomery County, Maryland. In the application process, he was asked to list his “professional, service and fraternal organizations,” and for a list of “extracurricular activities” he had engaged in as a student. He did not list his membership in the Homophiles of Penn State in response to either question. In later court trials, Acanfora would admit that “…he realized that this information would be significant, but he believed disclosure would foreclose his opportunity to be considered for employment on an equal basis with other applicants.”

On the 7th of November in 1972 Acanfora filed a suit on behalf of the Board of Education, the Superintendent (Dr. Elseroad), and the deputy Superintendent (Dr. Miedema), under 42 U.S.C. SS 1983 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The complaint claimed that:

Joe Acanfora (born July 6, 1950 in Jersey City, New Jersey) is an American educator and activist. Acanfora who is gay and openly gay, was able to be an Earth science teacher at the public schools of Pennsylvania as well as Maryland in the beginning of the 1970s. The battle from 1971 to 1974 over a number of demotions and dismissals by the authorities of his teaching positions in public schools because of his homosexuality included litigation through the courts of the United States. experts testifying in court about the effects of having being a gay teacher over his pupils; protracted coverage in the media and appearances in CBS 60 Minutes; a “morality investigation” by the Penn State University Teacher Certification Council as well as the active involvement of his parents in public discussion.

Acanfora began his studies at Pennsylvania State University in fall 1968 with the intention to pursue a meteorology major and join the Navel Reserve Officers Training Corps. After the conclusion in his second semester Acanfora realized that he wanted to become a teacher and chose to pursue a degree in the field of secondary education. He was a junior when he joined and was soon appointed treasurer for the Homophiles of Penn State (HOPS) the newly established campus group committed to defending the constitutional and civil rights of homosexuals as well as increasing the public’s understanding of homosexuality. When the University was unable to give an official recognition to the group and its four members which included Acanfora initiated legal proceedings to force recognition. The action, which eventually was successful, gained a significant amount of publicity locally during which Acanfora admitted that he was gay.

Despite this caution, Acanfora was hired without further interviewing by the Assistant Principal of Parkland Junior High School in Rockville, Maryland, and entered into a one-year teaching contract. He was one of 719 new teachers hired in Montgomery County in 1972, out of 10,000 applicants. Acanfora commenced his duties as an eighth grade earth science teacher on August 29,

1972. His teaching performance was judged entirely satisfactory by his supervisor.
