James Elmer Benning (born April 29 1963) is an Canadian professional executive in ice hockey and an ex-player. Benning is director general for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was selected in the initial round 6th overall, of 1981’s NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, he played 610 games in nine seasons with both the Maple Leafs and the Canucks scoring 52 goals and scores of 243 points. He was spotted during his career as an offensive defensive player.

In his third season playing for the Leafs, Benning experienced a spectacular season, during the league, scoring 51 points. In the middle of the season, there was speculation that Benning and his teammates Borje Salming were going to be picked for the Campbell Conference All Stars at the 36th National Hockey League All-Star Game. The Leafs were also considering making a nomination for Benning in the Bill Masterston Memorial Trophy but ultimately they chose Gary Nylund instead. The 1985-86 season was the first time Benning had been a vital part of the defence team, being paired on numerous times alongside Al Iafrate and used in crucial circumstances. Benning was the team’s top scorer among defencemen during their 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons .
