Kawau was a five-year veteran as a player in the Stags backfield. He also made his 50th appearance at the 2010 Air New Zealand Cup. His time with Southland ended with a high note thanks to the squad’s Ranfurly Shield triumph over Canterbury towards the end in the season of 2009.

Kawau was back in Super Rugby in 2009 when Kawau was called up for the Hurricanes and played nine times mostly as a substitute. Kawau returned to the Hurricanes in 2010, however, he did not play for most of the season because of injuries. He only returned for 6 games towards the end of the season.

Kawau made his debut as a provincial player in the province of Otago in 2003, but due to a knee injury that occurred in the build-up towards the opening match of the year,, he was unable to return for the last two matches of 2003. In 2004, he played in six games for Otago. Because of a lack of regular playing time Kawau was transferred into Southland in 2005. There, his career would take off.

After having a great time with Southland, Kawau was called to the Highlanders team midway through in the Super 14 season as an injury replacement.
