Jarrad Butler (born 20 July, 1991) was an Australian union rugby player. He is primarily an outside flanker but also has a role as a number 8. Butler is currently a player as captain for Irish provincial team Connacht as part of the Pro14. Prior to becoming a member of Connacht, Butler played in Super Rugby, first for the Reds and later for the Brumbies. When he was playing with the Brumbies, Butler also played for the National Rugby Championship the Canberra Vikings in which he was as captain.
While with the Brumbies, Butler also played for the club side, known as the Canberra Vikings. As part of the Vikings the team, Butler played with the National Rugby Championship, a club tournament that was established in 2014. Butler participated in seven of the eight matches in the first season and scored six scores of tries. In the 2015 campaign, he was named captain and played in all of the team’s games, when they finished runners-up against Brisbane City. Butler was captain for in the season of 2016, in which Butler played for six times. The decision to leave to Connacht at the close of 2017’s Super Rugby season meant he was not a part of Connacht’s Vikings during the 2016 NRC. He made 23 appearances during his three seasons with the team.
Butler has also played for international invitational side, the Barbarians. He was called up for the team’s game against Argentina on 21 November 2015. Butler featured as a replacement in a 49–31 defeat.
In July 2017, it was announced that Butler had signed a three-year contract with Irish Pro14 side Connacht. He joined the province ahead of the 2017–18 season. He was a regular fixture in the first team for the year, starting in 17 of the side’s 26 games and featuring from the bench in a further two. At the end of his first season, Butler was named Connacht’s Players’ Player of the Year. Following the retirement of long-serving captain John Muldoon in 2018, Butler was named as the province’s new captain for the 2018–19 season. He continued to be a regular fixture in the team, starting 19 of the team’s 21 regular season games in the 2018–19 Pro14 as they finished third in their conference. He also started in the play-off quarter-final defeat to Ulster at the end of the season.
In 2012, during the Super Rugby season, Butler joined the Reds with a contract for a short time with the Australian Rugby Union academy to help with an injury crisis. Butler made his debut as an alternate with the Highlanders on the 6th of July on Suncorp Stadium. He returned for the final fixture of regular-season play against Waratahs. Butler’s 2012 performances prompted the head Coach Ewen McKenzie to include him as part of the franchise’s extended playing squad for 2013. Butler was selected a further 10 times in 2013, which included a total of 10 caps. Super Rugby season, with only one of those appearances coming off the bench.
