Mackintosh was also selected to the 2008 All Blacks End of Year Tour to Hong Kong, Britain. Mackintosh was born in Fortification, 50 miles south-east of Invercargill. He played on the junior side of the Tokanui Rugby Club. He attended Southland Boys High School.

In March 2016, Mackintosh joined the American newly formed PRO Rugby competition with the Ohio Aviators. He played in the competition’s only season before returning to France.

After a successful 2008 in the NPC with Southland (where he reached the semi- finals for the Air New Zealand Cup), he was selected in the All Blacks squad that will tour Europe in November 2008. His test debut against Scotland was his first international appearance.

In 2004, Jamie Mackintosh was in his first match for Southland. He came off the bench against Waikato. Mackintosh played in eight NPC games that year, and he started in two. Mackintosh played in eight of the eight games he participated in in 2006. Mackintosh was two more for the 2007 season. He played in ten matches and started in every one. He also won wins over Otago Bay of Plenty, Manawatu, and Bay of Plenty. Mackintosh was an established fixture of the Southland Stags up to his surprise omission from 2016’s squad. He has 123 caps for Southland, but his greatest achievement was bringing the Ranfurly Shield back home to Southland in 2009. This feat broke a 50-year drought. Mackintosh was also part of the 2011 team that captured the shield for the second time in modern team history.

Mackintosh was selected into the Highlanders squad in 2007. He played in three matches off the bench. Mackintosh participated in 11 Highlanders matches in 2008. He was also awarded two yellow cards and scored two tries. He was the captain of the Highlanders for the 2010-2011 seasons. For the 2014 Super Rugby season, he joined the Chiefs with whom he played till 2015.

During the autumn 2015, Mackintosh joined the Top 14 side Montpellier. In 2016, Mackintosh returned to the Top 14 competition with Section Paloise.
