This kept him out of action during the preseason. Brann had signed Martin Andresen so Haugen was only able to make a few appearances during the first half. Haugen continued to play regularly during the second half of season when some of the team’s middlefielders were injured. Haugen, a local player, was still the first choice in the midfield of the team for many seasons, despite being challenged by several high-profile signings. Haugen was at his best in 2006, when he was playing regularly for the team fighting for the league title. Haugen only made four appearances in the 2007 season, when Brann won the Tippeligaen for the first time since 1963, and he joined Tromso half-way through the season, as he wanted to play more regularly and signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the club. Haugen was a Brann official match player, playing 129 matches and scoring 5 goals.
