They asked Byun to film the final days of a member of their group who had been diagnosed as having cancer. The film shows the women gaining self-confidence and eventually moving behind the camera to use film as a medium for both healing and protest. The final chapter, My Own Breathing (1999), introduces a new character: a 14-year-old girl who was forced into servitude. Although forced prostitution can be heartbreaking, Byun focused on the present and captured details that revealed the humor, personality, and strength of these women, who survived years after their youth. Documentaries help viewers see the effects of forced prostitution on women’s lives and not just as tragic abstractions.

Byun was also credited as one of the cinematographers for the documentary Repatriation (Kim Dong-won, 2004), which follows two North Korean political prisoners and their decade-long struggle to return home after their release.
