Before she began her coaching career, she was a Providence Friars college ice hockey player, winning the ECAC player award in 1989. From 1992 to 2000 she was Northeastern Huskies’ head coach. She won the ECAC Coach of the Year 1994 award. Linstad was named the University of Connecticut’s women’s hockey coach in 2000. She coached the Connecticut Huskies for 13 seasons. Linstad celebrated her 300th win as a head coaching coach on February 13, 2010 with a victory of 4-1 against her alma mater, Providence Friars. Linstad quit abruptly her position as University of Connecticut coach on March 13, 2013 after two disappointing seasons. She was awarded the Women’s Hockey Founders Award in 2016 by the American Hockey Coaches Association, for her contributions to women’s ice hockey development.
Linstad was accused of firing a female hockey player after he allegedly assaulted her on campus in 2011.
