Michael Craig Nelms, born April 8, 1955, is an American football defensive back and kick returninger who played five seasons for the Washington Redskins between 1980 and 1984. Nelms was a member of the Canadian Football League (CFL) before he joined the NFL. Baylor University was where he played college football.
Mike Nelms was elected to the D.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He was inducted alongside Redskins legends Art Monk and Chris Hanburger, Ken Houston and Russ Grimm. The hall also includes Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky and Tony Kornheiser. Ron Weber, a former Capitols play-by-play announcer, is also a member.
Nelms was a Pro Bowler three times in 1980, 1981, and 1982. In 1981 and 1982, he was the NFL’s leading kickoff returner with a total of 62 yards. He also served as the Redskins’ starting punt returner for Super Bowl XVII. He returned six punts for 52 yard, which are both Super Bowl records. He also made two kickoff returns of 44 yards in Super Bowl XVII.

In 1973, Mike Nelms started his college career at Sam Houston State. After graduating from Sam Houston State, he transferred to Baylor where he was coached by Grant Taeff. In college, Nelms was a defensive back and occasionally returned kicks. He only returned a few kicks during his Baylor college career, but did make one interception.
After being drafted by Buffalo Bills, Nelms started his professional career. He was the last to be cut during training camp. In 1977, he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL team. He was then optioned to Ottawa Rough Riders later that year.
