He attended West Stanly High School. Broadway, a 1977 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate, played on the University’s defensive line from 1974 until 1977. He was instrumental in leading the North Carolina Tar Heels into the 1974 Sun Bowl as well as the 1977 Liberty Bowl. Broadway was a senior at the University of North Carolina in 1977 and received All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors.

In 2007, Broadway was appointed Grambling State University’s head football coach. He led Grambling State’s Tigers to a 11-2 record, the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship (SWAC), and the black national championship.

In 2017, Broadway’s NCA&T Aggies capped off a perfect season defeating the once-beaten Grambling Tigers in the Celebration to win another black national titles.

Broadway’s wife Dianne died in June 2004 after suffering from scleroderma for 14 years. This is a rheumatic disorder of the connective tissue.

Roderick Craig Broadway, born April 9, 1955, is an ex-American football coach. From 2003 to 2006, he was the North Carolina Central University’s head football coach. He also served as Grambling State University’s football coach from 2007 to 2010. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University was his home from 2011 to 2017. His career coaching record for college football is 125-45. He is the only black coach to win three national college football championships at different schools.

Broadway worked as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I-A for 22 years before he took over at Grambling. He took over the NCCU’s struggling football program in 2002. It was then an NCAA Division II school located in Durham, North Carolina. Before Broadway arrived, the school was 2-8. In 2005 and 2006, the Broadway team led North Carolina Central Eagles towards Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships and black national championships. His final three seasons at NCCU Broadway saw a record of 29-4. His tenure at NCCU ended with a record of 31-31.

On February 2, 2011, Broadway resigned from his position as head coach at Grambling State University, and the following day it was announced that he accepted the position of head coach at North Carolina A&T. Broadway, replaced Alonzo Lee who was in his second year at the position before his release. In 2015, he led the Aggies to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and black national titles.
