Howard was not able to win a spot in the Wests Tigers joint team after four seasons playing with Wests in late 1990s. Wayne Bennett didn’t have such concerns and used Howard as a stop-gap prop to bring him off the bench during the Broncos 2000 NRL Grand Final victory over the Sydney Roosters. Howard, who was mostly on the interchange bench, represented England at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.
In the 2001 Super League Grand Final loss to the Bradford Bulls, he was a prop for the Wigan Warriors.
He was a member of the Western Suburbs Magpies’ playing roster and earned many nicknames like Harves, Harvester, freight, but mainly Night Train. Harvey Howard, an English ex-professional rugby league footballer, is a former English professional. He played in the 1990s as well as the 2000s. He was an international representative for England and Great Britain. He played for Widnes and Leeds in England and for Wigan and Brisbane Broncos in Australia.
Howard was a player in Australia while regularly traveling to England. Howard played left-second-row, i.e. Number 11, in Widnes’ 24-0 win over Leeds in 1991-92 Regal Trophy Final at Central Park, Wigan on Saturday, 11 January 1992. He was right-prop. He was number 10, in Widnes’ defeat by Wigan of 14-20 in the 1993 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday, 1 May 1993. He also played right-prop during Leeds’ defeat by Wigan of 16-26 in the 1994 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday, 30 April 1994. Number 8, in the defeat of Wigan to 10-30 in the 1995 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London, on Saturday 29 April 1995. He also won his first international cap for England in 1995 against Wales while at Leeds.
Howard was appointed Hull Kingston Rovers’ first team coach in late 2004. Howard was dismissed shortly before the Northern Rail Cup Final, which the Hull Kingston Roverswent on to win 18-16 over Castleford Tigers, with the Hull Kingston Rovers utilising the temporary player-coaching abilities of James Webster. Permanently taking over from Howard was the former Toulouse coach, Justin Morgan.
