The year 2006 was when Kent created a group of rappers who battled who went by”the name” Giraffe Nuts. The group that was formed consisted of 10 performers: Kent, Rusty Chains, Lance Ambu, Alltruisms, Roadblok, Doomsday, Encyclopedia Brown, Moodswangz, Kang the Konquorer, and Elfamail. The group released their debut album, Eat Them, in 2007.

In 2013, Kent, Detroit emcee Red Pill and producer Apollo Brown formed Ugly Heroes, releasing their self-titled debut in May 2013. The album examines the harsh realities of the members’ hometowns. Their second studio album, Everything in Between, was released on June 24, 2016.

Weiss was born and raised in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood. He started writing at the age of 15, and later attended Columbia College Chicago as a music major.

It was 1999 when Weiss quit college, and created Organic Mind Unit, a live hip hop group which performed in Chicago. The first OMU versions had eight rappers, and Weiss as drummer. When he presented the other OMU members his work, they urged him to get started singing. He was given the moniker Verbal Kent, which is a reference to Roger “Verbal” Kint, the con character who was played in the film by Kevin Spacey in the 1995 film The Usual Suspects, who composes a narrative that is based on his surroundings an enigma that acquires an entirely new meaning after repeated watching the film. Weiss has stated that he strives for this level of depth with his poetry.

In 2003, as he walked down an empty alley close to Clark and Pratt in Chicago with a friend who slashed Kent’s throat with a knife. He missed his jugular by a fraction of one centimeter. Kent managed to escape to his car and took his self towards Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston while blood was gushing from his neck. Kent received more than 100 stitches, and it took him two months to heal. There were no arrests made, and the reason behind the attack is not known.

Fist Shaking, Kent’s third album, came out in 2008. His sixth solo release, 2011’s Save Yourself, features contributions from Masta Ace, Sadat X, Ed O.G. and One Be Lo, and production from Pete Rock, Marco Polo and !llmind. Sound of the Weapon, released in February 2014, was produced by Khrysis and given a rating of 4.0 (out of 5) by Hip Hop DX. His seventh solo album, Anesthesia, was released on September 11, 2015, and given a rating of 6.0 out of 10 by Pitchfork.
