Harrison Browne (born Hailey Browne on May 13, 1993) was a professional ice hockey player who played for the Metropolitan Riveters (NWHL) and the Buffalo Beauts (NWHL). Browne was born a female and participated in women’s competitions throughout his ice hockey career. He came out in 2016 as a transgender male and became the first openly transgender professional athlete in any team sport.
Browne signed a professional agreement with the Buffalo Beauts, a newly formed NWHL hockey league on August 29, 2015. He played in 18 games during the 2015-16 season and scored 5 goals. He also had 12 points. He was a part of 5 games in the NWHL postseason and scored 2 goals and 2 assists.
On May 14, 2016, Browne signed a second one-year contract with the Beauts.
On August 7, 2017 he announced he would be putting his retirement on hold and would instead return for the 2017–18 season with the Metropolitan Riveters.
Browne made his debut with Maine against Quinnipiac on October 12, 2012. Browne’s first goal for Maine was also on January 19, 2013, against the Vermont Catamounts. His last NCAA goal was against the Connecticut Huskies on February 21, 2015.

Browne was a Mercyhurst Laker player for one season before transferring to University of Maine. He then played his remaining college years with the Black Bears. Browne made his NCAA debut on September 30, 2011, playing for the Mercyhurst Lakers against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. For his first NCAA career goal, he waited until October 29th 2011 to score against Lindenwood, a conference rival.
Browne was a member of Team Canada’s U18 World Women’s IIHF Championship team. He played in the gold-medal game. His Team Canada teammates included his future Mercyhurst and Beauts teammates Shelby Bram and Amanda Makela. Browne was also part of the Ontario provincial team which won the silver medal at Canada’s 2011 Winter Games.
In October 2016, Browne came out as a transgender man and thus became the first openly transgender athlete in professional American hockey. Browne will not hormonally transition until the end of his professional playing career, as the hormones involved in female-to-male gender transition violate anti-doping regulations.
