Harold John Snepsts, (Latvian Harolds Dzons Snepsts; October 24, 1954) was a former Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played 17 seasons in Canada’s National Hockey League. He is a beloved player in the history and current scouting team of Vancouver Canucks.

Snepsts would suffer a disastrous 1982-83 season. Late in the 1989–90 season he was dealt to the St. Louis Blues to add experience for the playoffs. He played out his final season with the Blues, during which he played in his 1000th NHL game, before retiring in 1991. He was one of the last players to play in the NHL without a helmet. After his retirement only five helmetless players remained in the league.

Following his departure from the Blues, he spent a season as head coach of the San Diego Gulls of the IHL, leading them to a 93-point season. He signed on as head coach of the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL for the 1998–99, but inherited a rebuilding team and was fired midway through his second season.

The Canucks were, however, one of the weaker teams in the NHL during this time. They were able to catch fire in 1981-82 and go on a long playoff run that saw them reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Together with Richard Brodeur, goalie, Snepsts was the heart and soul of the team’s defense. He was also a towering figure of strength during the playoffs. He would make a horrible turnover in overtime against the New York Islanders in the first game of finals. This resulted in Mike Bossy scoring the winning goal. The club was swept in four matches.

Snepsts was a “stay-at home defender” who played junior hockey with the Edmonton Oil Kings. He was selected 59th by the Vancouver Canucks during the 1974 NHL amateur draft. His first training camp was a success. He played in 27 games with the Canucks from 1974 to 1975, scoring his first NHL goal. He was a regular with the Canucks from 1975 to 1976, playing in 78 games, scoring three goals, and scoring 18 points. His hardworking, efficient, blue-collar defense game, as well as his charming personality and large moustache, would make him a fan favorite.

However, his time in Detroit would be plagued with injury. Knee problems limited him to just 35 games in 1985–86, and he failed to score a goal for the second consecutive year. In 1986–87, he was having his best campaign in years for a rejuvenated Detroit team until he injured his shoulder in February, and then re-injured it during the playoffs. The resulting off-season surgery forced him to miss the first half of the 1987–88 season, although he returned to help the Wings reach the Campbell Conference finals for the second consecutive year.
