Hanyani Shimange is one of the most popular and richest Rugby Union Player who was born on April 17, 1978 in Elim, Western Cape, South Africa. Hanyani Masana Shimange, born 17 April 1978 in Elim in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, is a former player in rugby union. He was a hooker by choice, but he did one game at flank for the Springboks.
He was a player for the Free State Cheetahs, the Cats, and then returned to the Western Cape to sign a contract with Western Province. He played Currie Cup for Western Province from 2004 to 2006. Shimange was often picked to be a substitute and played very few games. He moved to Boland in 2007 to get more game-time. Boland laid him off after the Fidentia meltdown in 2007 and he ended playing for no South African domestic Union.
After retirement, Shimange joined South African pay TV channel SuperSport’s broadcasting team in 2011 as a rugby analyst.
In 2013, Shimange took over the coaching of the University of Cape Town’s rugby team, the Ikey Tigers, for their Super League A campaign after the departure of their head coach Kevin Foote to the Western Force following the 2013 Varsity Cup season.
Shimange made his debut in the Springboks’ match against Wales on 26 June 2004 at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria. He replaced Victor Matfield in 62 minutes and played his first test at flank. South Africa won the match 53-18. As a replacement, all Shimange’s international caps were removed. He was able to take the field 9 times from the replacement bench but was not able to use the bench for 12 more. He played against Scotland in his final Springboks test on June 10, 2006. South Africa won the match 36-16. After being included on the bench for subsequent tests, he was not used again. Coach Jake White dropped him from the Springbok squad in May 2007.

Shimange began his rugby career in Western Province as a member of the Western Province Academy Team. He was selected for the South Africa U/21 team in 1999, which participated in the Southern Hemisphere U/21 competition. He moved to Durban in 2000, where he was chosen for the Natal Wildebeest competition. He also made his debut in Currie Cup for Sharks that year. He moved to Bloemfontein in 2002 to play for the Free State Cheetahs. There he played in both the Vodacom Cup and the Currie Cup. He was a Cheetah representative and was selected for the Cats’ Super Rugby Team in 2003. He played 18 games in total for the Cats between 2003 and 2004, often replacing other players, but did not score any points. He also sat on the bench for two games but didn’t take to the field.
Shimange was nominated in 2002 for the SA Rugby Young Player Of The Year award.
He did however continue to be part of the Stormers’ squad in the Super Rugby competition that year. He returned to Cape Town in 2008 where he started playing for Western Province in the Vodacom Cup, before playing Currie Cup rugby for them from 2009 until his retirement in 2010. In January 2010 Shimange trained with the Lions Super Rugby squad while being assessed by Lions’ coach Dick Muir for a possible loan agreement with the Stormers to whom he was contracted. He did not end up playing for the Lions on loan and formed part of the Stormers squad for the 2010 Super Rugby season.
