The Huskies began the 2008-09 season hoping to challenge for home advantage on the ice within Hockey East (4th spot or higher) in the very first time since 1997/98. The Huskies finished 23-9-4 during the regular season and led the conference up to the end of the season where they lost to Boston College 4-1, falling to second at the bottom of Hockey East in the process. The highlights of the season were Northeastern’s first sweep over Maine in over 25 years, and a victory against Boston College in the Beanpot for the first time since 1994, and also winning two of the three games played against the two previous year’s Hockey East Finalists, Vermont and Boston College. The Huskies started their postseason off by winning against Boston College University of Massachusetts Amherst in the Hockey East Quarterfinals at Matthews Arena 2-to-1 while the third game was won in overtime thanks to the goal of the freshman Alex Tuckerman.
On June 16, 2014, Cronin was named an assistant coach to the New York Islanders, after serving three years as an assistant to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Cronin spent time working with USA Hockey before joining the New York Islanders in 1998. He served as an assistant coach with the Islanders for 5 seasons before being named head coach of their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He coached the Sound Tigers for 2 seasons with great success, going 78–61–16–5. On June 16, 2014, Greg Cronin was named assistant coach of the New York Islanders.
In 2005, Cronin was appointed in 2005 to replace Bruce Crowder as head coach of the Northeastern Huskies men’s hockey team. Cronin was the new coach of a team who was able to graduate almost all their top players from a team of 15-18-5 and was not a good chance of competing in the near time. The team was 3-24-7 in 2005-06 and then posted an impressive 13-18-5 record in the following year , despite the growth among Cronin’s players. The team improved further to 16-18-3 by 2007-08. playing their very first postseason game since 2005 with a 2-1 loss against the University of Vermont.
