Born in the town in Poulithra in Arcadia Hardouvelis was a professor of economics and finance, Department of Banking and Financial Management at the University of Piraeus and chief economist and director of research for EUROBANK Group. He was the director of Economic Office of Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos (November 2011 – May 2012) as well as assisting the government in talks with bondholders on a writedown of their debt, and working together with his colleagues from the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and the European Central Bank on Greece’s second adjustment program. In 2000 and 2004 he was Director of the Economic Office of Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

His name was listed among the top 50 individuals in the world of applied econometrics from 1989 to 1995.

He worked as an economist and research advisor in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1987-1993) and also as an advisor for the Bank of Greece for the following two years (1994-1995) and also served as a the governor’s second alternate in the European Monetary Institute (precursor to the European Central Bank). In 1996-2000,, he was the head of the economics department in the National Bank of Greece, which he transformed the Economic Analysis Division, created the Risk Management Division, the Assets-Liabilities Management Department and the Investors Relations Department. He also played an important part in the creation of the Athens Derivatives Exchange, as the first member of the director’s board (1997-2000). The following years, he was appointed to Eurobank as the company’s chief economist.
