After playing in the schoolboy league during his time at Middelburg Technical High School Tossel made it into the Pumas team for the Under-18 Craven Week event. Tossel then relocated to Durban to join with the Sharks Academy. In 2008-2009, Tossel played for English North 1 West side West Park St Helens before returning to Durban.
In 2010, he was a member of with the Pumas and was included in the Vodacom Cup squad, but did not make it to the team. The following year, he played with NWU Pukke during the 2011 Varsity Cup competition.
In 2014, Tossel scored nine tries in just seven matches in the 2014 Vodacom Cup competition to finish as the joint-leading try-scorer for the competition. This try haul included a hat-trick scored against the Falcons in Kempton Park and two tries against the Pumas in Middelburg, where Tossel went to high school.
