In 2005, he was back in New Zealand to be assistant coach at Hawke’s Bay during the 2005-2006 season. He was instrumental in helping the Magpies to win their first ever division Two final in the final against Nelson Bays in 2005 and aiding in the running of the backs for the first Air New Zealand Cup in the year 2006.
In 2007, he returned in 2007 to Japan as a coach of Kintetsu Liners.

Konia began his career in rugby playing for Manawatu during 57 matches from 1989-1992 , and Hawke’s Bay 40 times from 1993 and 1995, prior to the Super 14 season, where Konia played in 96 first-class matches as well as 7 seasons in representative rugby with the Hurricanes in 1996. In that time, he also participated in New Zealand Colts, New Zealand Colts, New Zealand Divisional XV New Zealand Development XV New Zealand the XV New Zealand Maori and New Zealand Barbarians in addition to being the All Black trials player.
Konia was in the middle of All Blacks selection and was available in 1995 for the Rugby World Cup squad. However, it was in a different nation, Japan, that Konia earned his name on the international stage of rugby. After playing for the Japanese club, Konia debuted for the Japan national team in San Francisco against United States on May 17th, 2003 and in the following year, Konia was picked up by the then national head coach Shogo Mukai to join Japan during the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia together with fellow ex-Canadian Reuben Parkinson, scoring a memorable goal against France during the tournament’s pool stage. Konia spent the next eight years playing pro-level rugby in Japan initially playing for the Isetan club, and later with the NEC Green Rockets winning the All-Japan Rugby Football Championship twice in 2003 in 2003 against Suntory Sungoliath and in 2005 against Toyota Verblitz. Konia’s last cap in Japan was against United States, in Gosford on October 27, 2003.
