Atkins has twice been selected to the First Team All-Pro and is an eight-time Pro Bowler.

On December 20, 2016, it was announced that Atkins was voted to the 2017 Pro Bowl, along with teammate A. J. Green. He was ranked 68th by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017. Pro Football Focus gave Atkins the sixth highest overall grade of all qualifying interior defensive linemen in 2016.
