Despite not playing for New South Wales against Queensland or against Great Britain, Miller’s club form was so good that selectors could not ignore him for the Test against Papua New Guinea. Gavin Miller was born in Inverell, New South Wales. Prior to his rise to fame in the late 1980s Miller had already enjoyed a lengthy professional career in rugby league. Miller began his career with Goulburn as a centre , and was advised for a place with Western Suburbs in 1977. In that year, he earned an enrolment within the squad at seventeen , but was recruited to Eastern Suburbs the following year. Miller was not a success for Easts over the following two years , however Cronulla believed he was a potential player and signed him to the team for the 1980 season.
In the middle of his career as a centre, Miller obtained a regular spot in the Cronulla team and slowly showed that he was a ball player of exceptional ability as well as the capacity to run, which he displayed in his time at Wests. In his first four years at Cronulla Miller was then moved to the forwards, and performed so well that in 1983, he was selected to represent New South Wales. Miller didn’t live up to expectations at New South Wales and throughout the season, he was involved in an issue with the Sharks committee. Miller had stated that he would quit the financially strained club if it failed to achieve the KB Cup. The Sharks did not achieve this and Miller was fired in the middle of October. In November, Miller was hired by his old team Eastern Suburbs but played so poor that he was sent to at a level as low as third grade. Meanwhile, the Roosters were able to win only five first grade games from 24.
After leaving Easts, Miller went to England and joined Hull Kingston Rovers. In this role he developed his hitherto-dormant ball skills and was rewarded with many awards, including the Man of Steel award for the 1985–86 Rugby Football League season.
