Garth Ancier (born September 3 1957, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey) is an American television producer and executive of the media. The most well-known of his achievements is the decision to cancel the cult show Freaks and Geeks following its first season.

It was in 1986 that Barry Diller, Jamie Kellner and Rupert Murdoch tapped the then 28-year-old Ancier to become the first entertainment director for the newly formed Fox Broadcasting Company, where Ancier introduced 21 Jump Street, Married… with Children, The Simpsons and In Living Color on the air.

From October 1991 through July 1992, Ancier served as the television consultant to the Democratic National Committee, specifically to advise on the television presentation of the Democratic Convention in New York City and reporting to DNC Chairman Ron Brown. In that role, Ancier introduced political convention format innovations, such as a 56-screen “videowall” integrated into the convention podium and program, to such forums for the first time.

Also in late 1992, Ancier co-created and executive produced Ricki Lake with former Donahue producer Gail Steinberg. The tabloid talk show aired for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004.

The career of network television star Ancier began in 1979, when NBC Entertainment president Brandon Tartikoff recruited him as a programming associate. He progressed up the ranks, and was responsible for the production of some of the network’s most popular comedies , such as The Cosby Show, Cheers, Family Ties and Golden Girls.

He started his broadcasting career when he was a high school sophomore in

1972. He was an editor for NBC radio stations WBUD-AM and WBJHH-FM located which are located in Trenton, New Jersey. Radio-wise, he launched American Focus, a weekly national interview show aired by more than 300 radio stations across the U.S., including New York’s WNBC and WBJH-FM, which is part of the umbrella of non-profit Focus on Youth. Ancier was host and executive producer for over 250 episodes until 1979. Each episode featured an extensive career retrospective with guests that ranged in age from Ayn Rand, Henry Fonda to David Brinkley. The series continued to air through 17 consecutive years. The other participants included former presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald R. Ford, George H.W. Bush as well as Caspar William. Weinberger Lucille Ball Howard Cosell, Henry Fonda, Tom Wolfe and Pete Rose. The first five hundred films were donated to the what is now the Paley Center for Media in 1984.
