Jane Tranter is one of the most popular and richest Executive Producer who was born on March 17, 1963 in Oxford, England, United Kingdom. Jane Tranter, an English television executive, was born 17 March
- She was the executive vice president of programming and production at BBC Worldwide Los Angeles from 2009 to 2015. She was the BBC’s controller for fiction from 2006 to 2008. In this role, she managed the output of the BBC in drama and comedy as well as acquisitions of films and programmes from abroad. Critics were concerned that BBC had too much creative power invested in one person. Following Tranter’s departure to the United States, she was removed from the role of controller of fiction and the responsibilities were split among four executives.
She was promoted to Controller for Drama Commissioning at BBC in 2000. In this role, she was responsible for all aspects of the Corporation’s drama output, including serials, series, and one-offs. She was responsible for the drama department’s ratings-grabbing dramas, such as Spooks (BBC One 2002-2011) or Waking the Dead (1900-2011). The BBC also screened award-winning productions like Paul Abbott’s State of Play (2003-2005) and the adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel Bleak House ((2005)). She was also responsible for the transformation of the popular dramas Casualty, and its spinoff Holby City, into year-round dramas. This included the addition of a fourth week to the soap opera EastEnders as well as the successful revival of the classic science-fiction series Doctor Who.
In September 2006, Tranter was promoted to the newly created Head of Fiction position at the BBC. This made her responsible not only for drama, but for comedy, films and acquired programmes from overseas. In this new position, Tranter had an almost unprecedented amount of control over scripted drama on the BBC.
Throughout 2008, there was media speculation that Tranter would be leaving the BBC to take up a position as head of BBC Worldwide’s American arm. Despite denying the claims at a Royal Television Society event in June, her new role in the US was confirmed in September. She began her new job as executive vice- president of programming and production at BBC Worldwide’s Los Angeles base on 1 January 2009. The BBC had been criticised for consolidating the control of fiction commissioning in one person; following Tranter’s resignation, the responsibilities were split between four BBC executives.
After her success at Carlton as an executive producer, the BBC made a bid for her return to the BBC. She returned to the Corporation in 1997 as an executive producers in the Film & Single Drama section. She was promoted to Head of Drama Serials in 1999. She was responsible for coordinating and supervising a variety of dramas that were made or coproduced by BBC’s drama department. These included Arthur Smith’s football-based comedy, My Summer With Des (1998), as well as gritty contemporary dramas like Warriors (1999), starring Matthew Macfadyen, and traditional BBC literary adaptations in David Copperfield’s vein (also 1999).
