John Frederick William Birney CBE FRS FMedSci (born 6 December 1972) is the joint director alongside Rolf Apweiler of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) located in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. He is also the executive director but not as the sole one of Genomics England, chair of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) and an honorary professor of bioinformatics at University of Cambridge. Birney has made important contributions to genomics by establishing innovative bioinformatics tools and computational biology techniques. He was previously an associate professor for the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
