Heard was born in Nice, France on March 9, 1957, to a French mom and U. S. Navy officer father. “I grew up in France, England, Morocco, Washington, DC, and Dallas, all before I started school. I speak French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and a little German,” He stated. Relocating to Nice for school and graduation in 1977 from his lycee (high high school) in 1977 “I got passionately interested in wargames when I was attending the Lycee … primarily in Avalon Hill games like Kriegspiel, Luftwaffe, Third Reich, and Panzer Leader–the classics. There were, of course, no French editions of these games at the time, so we all had to learn the American versions.” Heard that he was an avid traveler and study the management of hotels and was concierges in both France as well as San Francisco.

After two years as translator (which included coordination with outside translators to translate game titles into German, Italian, and Spanish), Heard transferred to TSR’s Games Division in July 1985 as an Acquisitions Editor in collaboration with Jon Pickens. After Jon Pickens became Editor for Strategy & Tactics, Heard was promoted to Games Acquisitions coordinator, who was in charge of the hiring of freelance writers. Heard also contributed to some game designing, including adventure games like CM7, Tree of Life and M1 Into the Maelstrom; as well as co-authorship for DL12, Dragons of Faith.

Bruce Heard (born March 9 1957 from Nice, France) is a game designer and the creator of several games for the Dungeons and Dragons the fantasy-based role playing game developed by TSR.

While at San Francisco Heard discovered the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set in the course of his return to Paris the group he joined was the very first Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) group. “I started writing articles on D&D and AD&D for a French gaming magazine, and there learned that TSR was looking for a translator to translate the games into French. Well, I spoke and wrote both languages, and I knew the games, so I wrote a letter to Gary Gygax. By a coincidence, he was just about to come to Paris on business, and so we set up a meeting. I must have done OK, because he offered me the job.” TSR employed Heard in 1983. After a couple of months of working on translations within Nice, TSR moved the translating work to their headquarters located in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, which is why Heard relocated from his home in United States.
