In the wake of the suicide of Hipple’s 15-year-old son Hipple is actively involved in educating people on how depression can be a risk to your health. Hipple gives talks about mental illness and suicide prevention in high schools and youth groups, the military personnel with their spouses, family groups as well as corporations. He is the Outreach Coordinator for the Depression Center of the University of Michigan. A documentary film produced by the Depression Center features Hipple. He also co-authored an article regarding pain and depression among retired footballers.

Hipple’s book, Real Men Do Cry, was published in 2008. It discusses Hipple’s playing career with the Lions, his bouts with depression, and details of the warning signs of teens who have died from suicide.

In 2000 the 15-year-old son of Hipple Jeff took his own life with a shooting himself. Hipple admitted that he also been plagued by bouts of depression throughout his adolescence. After the death of his son, Hipple abused drugs and alcohol. He was found guilty of drunk driving and sentenced to some time behind bars. He was also a bankruptcy filing well.
