Azza Besbes is one of the most popular and richest Fencer who was born on November 28, 1990 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Azza Besbes (Arabic: z@ Bsbs born on 28 November 1990) is a Tunisian fencing sabre player, and five times African champion. She participated in the 2012, 2008 and the 2016 Summer Olympics and finished 7th 5th, 9th and 7th.

Besbes was selected for the individual event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as the highest-ranked fencer in the African zone. She beat South Africa’s Jyoti Chetty and then France’s Leonore Perrus before facing Olga Ovtchinnikova from Canada in the 16-man table. The match ended in technical issues following the fact that After Ovtchinnikova had a lead of 9-5 when she hit the ball, she smacked it that didn’t register on the computer and she was eventually not allowed. The incident took place twice. Once the issue was fixed, Besbes struck ten hits in succession to take the win.

At the age of 18 she became the first female African athlete to fence in an Olympic quarter-final. She took a 9–6 lead against US fencer and World No.1 Rebecca Ward, but Ward levelled, before taking the advantage on 14–12. Besbes rallied to 14-all at the end of fencing time. The last hit required a lengthy video review and was finally given to Ward, who won the bout. Besbes incriminated a lack of support from the Tunisian Fencing Federation, which did not allow her to prepare correctly for an event of this magnitude.

Besbes was born in a sports family: her father Ali is a former basketball player, who became a physical education teacher; her mother Hayet Ben Ghazi is a former foil fencer, who became an international referee. Her parents settled in Abu Dhabi before she was born. They had all their children–daughters Azza, Sarra, Héla and Rym, son Ahmed Aziz–take up fencing. Sarra competed in the women’s épée at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, while Héla is also a sabreur, member of the Tunisian national team.

In the 2008-09 season , Besbes achieved a top-8 result in the Ghent World Cup and earned the gold medal at the African Championships in Dakar. In the following year, she earned silver in the Africans in Tunis and made it to the quarter-finals in the 2010 World Championships in Paris, but was defeated from Ukraine’s Olena Khomrova. In the 2010-11 campaign, she made her debut at the World Cup with a bronze medal at the Bologna World Cup. She won her African victory in Cairo and then posted a last-16 performance in the World Championships in Catania. This allowed her to win the season at World No.8 and set a new career record in 2015.
