Dexter Price Filkins (born May 24 in 1961) is an American journalist best known for his coverage of conflict within Iraq as well as Afghanistan as a reporter for The New York Times. Filkins was one of the finalists in the Pulitzer Prize at the time of his 2002 reporting from Afghanistan and Pakistan, and was awarded an award of a Pulitzer in 2009 with the team of Times reporters for their reports in Pakistan in addition to Afghanistan. He’s been referred to by the media as “the premier combat journalist of his generation”. He writes on behalf of The New Yorker.

In 2006 and 2007, Filkins was at Harvard University for the Nieman Fellowship. In 2007 and 2008 Filkins was a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Filkins’ book, The Forever War (2008), chronicling his experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, was a New York Times best-seller. The Forever War won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best nonfiction book of 2008, and was named one of the best nonfiction books of the year by, among others, The New York Times, Amazon.com, The Washington Post, Time, and the Boston Globe.

Filkins has won two National Magazine Awards; in 2009, for his story, “Right At the Edge,” and in 2011 for “Bedrooms of the Fallen,” an essay with the photographer Ashley Gilbertson. Both pieces appeared in the New York Times Magazine.

Filkins has been awarded the two George Polk Awards, given every year to him by Long Island University to honor the journalistic integrity of his work as well as investigative journalism. Filkins was recognized for his reporting on the battle in Fallujah, Iraq, in November 2004 when the Marine group he traveled with lost nearly a quarter of its members in the span of eight days. The year 2011 was the same. Filkins as well as The New York Times colleague Mark Mazzetti won for their coverage of Afghanistan as well as Pakistan.
