Louis Menand (/’ lu: i.m@ ’ na: n.d/ ; born January 21, 1952), is an American essayist, critic, and professor. He is best known for his Pulitzer-winning book The Metaphysical Club (2001), which portrays the intellectual and cultural history in America’s late 19th and early twentieth centuries.
After graduating from Princeton University, he taught and held positions as a staff writer at The New York Review of Books (1994-2001), and The New Republic (1986-1987). Since 1991, he has been a contributing writer to The New Yorker. He was appointed Distinguished Professor of English in 1988 at the Graduate Center of City University of New York. In 1990, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2003, he accepted a position in Harvard’s English Department. He then left CUNY. He also taught at Queens College and Columbia.
He is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of English at Harvard. In 2018 he was appointed for a 5-year term to the Lee Simpkins Family professorship of Arts and Sciences. His principal field of academic interest is 19th and 20th century American cultural history. He teaches literary theory and postwar cultural history at both the graduate and undergraduate level. At Harvard he helped co-found a freshmen course with content in literature and philosophy, Humanities 10: An Introductory Humanities Colloquium. He also served as co- chair on the Task Force on General Education at Harvard working on a new general education curriculum.
In 1987, he published his first book, Discovering Modernism. T. S. Eliot in His Context. The long-awaited second book, The Metaphysical Club, is his much- anticipated work. It includes biographical material about Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., William James and Charles Sanders Peirce and details their contributions to the development of pragmatism. It was awarded the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for History and the 2002 Francis Parkman Prize. Menand published American Studies in 2002, a collection that includes essays about prominent American cultural figures.
