Denis Anthony Hickie (Irish name Donnacadh Antoin O HIceadh ) born on 13 February 1976 is a former professional union rugby player who was previously working for the Irish Rugby Football Union. He played for his club for Leinster. The primary position he played was in the flank. He was awarded the country’s 51 caps in Ireland with 29 scores for Ireland and also held the Irish record for tries scored until his Leinster teammate Brian O’Driscoll broke it in the year 2008.
Hickie was a victim of numerous injuries throughout his playing career. In October 2005, during the final week before the European Cup, he dislocated his right fibula in an accident on the training ground and was unable to participate in the autumn test series. The injury prevented him from participating in of the autumn international series, and he was later unable to regain his spot in the Irish team to Ulster’s Andrew Trimble for the duration of the year, despite his outstanding performances for Leinster. This was evident in his score in Leinster’s Heineken Cup quarter-final match against Toulouse in France in which he sprinted through the entire pitch and be joined by Gordon D’Arcy to score in the corner. A sprain to Trimble caused Trimble to be injured and saw Hickie return to the number 11 jersey for Ireland against Australia during the 2006 autumn tests, scoring an important score by beating four Australian players with his signature dance-like footwork. In addition to making the number 11 jersey his own, scoring two more tries during the 2007 Six Nations, Hickie was the first left winger to be selected in this year’s World Cup, after which the player was dismissed.
Brian O’Driscoll respectfully mentioned Denis & his contribution to Leinster Rugby in his after match interview after the final whistle in the 2009 Heineken Cup Final which Leinster won.
“I’ve always been a Leinster player. My dad played for Leinster, my uncle played for Leinster, my cousin played for Leinster. I’m a Leinster lad. I don’t make any apologies for it. That’s my team.”
He did not make it for his 2001 British as well as Irish Lions tour to Australia. He fought off an injury to his Achilles tendon that he suffered during the 2003 World Cup and forced his return to the Irish team, despite not losing any of his speed. His impressive performance in the 2005 Six Nations earned Hickie a selection for in 2005’s British as well as Irish Lions tour to New Zealand and the Leinster back became a crucial player in the midweek success of the team.
