The tournament was held in June of 2003. John took on fellow fellow-countryman Andrew Pagett 7-3 to retain the EBSA European Championship, becoming the first player to win the title. In 2016 John, Robin Hull and Maltese player Alex Borg are the only players who win both the EBSA European Championship twice.

After a 13-year absence John earned a place on the main tour by coming through Q-School in 2016. He beat Zak Surety 4–1 in the final round of second event to secure a two-year tour card.

In May 2018 he was suspended from the tour for suspected match fixing, although he had not accrued enough ranking points to stay on the main tour in any case.

For the 2002-03 snooker season, John was a part of in the tour’s main event. In the world’s first competition of the year which was the 2002 LG Cup, John secured an impressive 5-3 victory over Andrew Higginson before being eliminated in the second round against Martin Dziewialtowski. Following this, John struggled throughout the season, but his most impressive performance of the season. was at the 2003 Welsh Open where John reached the third qualifying round after losing 4-5 against future World champion Mark Selby in a final frame final. John was in 111th place .

John was the subject of attention in 2000 when he reached the quarterfinals of the European Under-19 Championship. The first big win of his career came in 2002, when he took home the EBSA European Championship after defeating David McLellan 7-2, he maintained his success at the amateur level for the rest of the year.
