Ron Luce was interviewed by MSNBC for a documentary called “Mind Over Mania” in 2011. The documentary featured footage of Teen Mania’s controversial doctrines and practices. Interviews were also conducted with former Honor Academy interns as well as Christian mental health professionals. They criticized the ministry for using what was called cult mind control techniques, according to Robert Jay Lifton’s “Eight Criteria for Thought Reform.” Luce declined a follow up interview, but later stated that the footage had been taken out of context and that MSNBC’s filmmakers approached him under false pretenses. MSNBC however, responded by denying that Luce had made false accusations. CINE awarded the documentary an award for investigative reporting.
Some have criticized his organization, citing frequent militant statements. Ron Luce speaks of a battle that is waged against the “powers of darkness” and also implemented through the “Love of Jesus Christ” to the individual. Some of his statements: “This is war. And Jesus invites us to get into the action, telling us that the violent—the ‘forceful’ ones—will lay hold of the kingdom.” At a Cleveland “Acquire the Fire” event, he said, “The devil hates us, and we gotta be ready to fight and not be these passive little lukewarm, namby-pamby, kum-ba-yah, thumb-sucking babies that call themselves Christians. Jesus? He got mad! … I want an attacking church!” Luce further exhorts his young followers to proclaim in unison: “I will keep my eyes on the battle, submitting to Your code, even when I don’t understand.”
On September 9, 2015, the 4th Judicial District Court in Colorado Springs issued an arrest warrant for Ron Luce for failure to appear at a hearing regarding a breach of contract lawsuit against Teen Mania. In the lawsuit, Compassion International sought a $174,124.73 judgment; Compassion’s position was that they paid for stage time at Teen Mania events to make appeals for attendees to sponsor children in need; those events were canceled and the funds were not returned.

Luce was living with his father when he became addicted to drugs and alcohol. Luce was adopted by a pastor and became a Christian under his care. He dedicated his life to the evangelism and training of young people. Oral Roberts University gave him his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Theology and his Masters degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Tulsa. He was appointed by President George W. Bush to the White House Advisory Commission on Drug-Free Communities in 2002. He served on that commission until 2004. Luce joined Oral Roberts University’s board of trustees in January 2008.

Acquire The Fire was also a weekly TV program that Luce hosted, which was telecast on Trinity Broadcasting Network as well as other Christian television stations. Young adults who wanted to get into youth ministry (and other) were offered training and experience as Honor Academy interns. In 2005, Luce started the Battle Cry Campaign.
