David James Poulin (born December 17th 1958) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who played for 13 seasons with the National Hockey League (NHL) playing for The Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.
The change to Mike Keenan to Paul Holmgren as the Flyers head coach entailed that the Flyers head coach’s responsibilities changed and responsibilities, as Poulin changed into defensive specialist. In 1989-90, the player’s performance was getting worse because of injuries and the inconsistent performances of his teammates and just a month after losing the captaincy, he was traded to the Boston Bruins for former Flyers center Ken Linseman. After he was back to full health, he could help Philly when they went to the Stanley Cup Finals, as the Flyers fell to Edmonton again, this time in a seven-game slugfest. To honor his work during the regular season Poulin was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1986-87, and was also included in 1987 and the 1986 NHL All-Star Games. Poulin was also a participant at the Rendez-vous in 1987, and won the game at the end of the third period of Game 1.

Poulin began his career in hockey in his team the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of the Fighting Irish from 1978-1982 and was selected to the second All-Star Team in 1982. The size of his frame made him dropped from the NHL Entry Draft so instead Poulin was sent into Sweden and played for the Rogle BK. The head coach of Poulin was Ted Sator, who was also a scout for Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League. Sator was impressed by the talents of Poulin and asked his inclusion on the Flyers roster. He made his transition into the NHL following a brief time playing for the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League. In the second date of his season Poulin made his NHL debut on the pitch at Maple Leaf Gardens, netting two goals in the 7-3 Philadelphia victory.
The next year, Poulin was put on an offensive line along with Brian Propp and Tim Kerr. The line was considered to be a danger offensive line for the majority of the following three seasons, and during his first NHL campaign, he establish a record (now being surpassed) for the highest number of points for an Flyers rookie, scoring 76 points. Poulin immediately established himself as an formidable leader, and was a player who could play on both ends of the ice, due to his age of just 25 years old when he began making a shift in the professional. These qualities helped him in being appointed captain of the team in the final days of 1984-85 season, replacing Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke, who had given his former teammates Darryl Sittler to Detroit on the day he was scheduled to become captain.
Poulin spent 10 years as head hockey coach at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame. In 2004, Poulin was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame. On July 23, 2009, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke introduced Poulin as the club’s new Vice-President of Hockey Operations. As of January 2013, Poulin has also served as the GM of the Toronto Marlies.
