Lucky Miles, his first feature film, was shot in Western Australia in 2007. Lucky Miles is a traditional Australian story about men lost in the desert. It features an ensemble cast that includes Rodney Afif, Kenneth Moraleda and Srisacd Sakraseuth. Lucky Miles was the opening night film at the 2007 Adelaide Film Festival. Later that year, Lucky Miles won the audience award for Best Film. Other awards include the Special Jury Prize in the 2007 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Best Screenplay at Vladivostok International Film Festival, the Black Pearl Award for Best New Director at Middle East International Film Festival, the Grand Prix at 9th Rencontres Internationales du Cinema des Antipodes, and Best Film at Asian Festival of First Films.

Rowland studied graphic design in South Australia at the North Adelaide School of Art. He began his career as an illustrator and designer specializing in the arts. His client list grew to include Sony (US), Womad International, and Peter Gabriel (UK). He was also the Art Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts (1989-1993), a position that saw him work alongside some of the most prominent artists such as Peter Brook, 7th Earl of Harewood and Jan Fabre. His illustration and design work has earned him numerous awards, including the Master’s Chair of the AADC in 1992.
In 1990, Michael founded Cowboy Books with the publication of Ten Drawings of the Jungle. Two years later, this first title was followed by The Existentialist Cowboys’ Last Stand (1992), and Life Advice for High-Plains Drifters ((2000)). Cowboy Books are available in Australia, North America, and Europe.
In 2008, Rowland co-wrote and directed the one-hour ABC, RTÉ, BBC drama The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce. Set in 1824 Van Diemen’s Land, The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce tells the true story of an escape from the notorious British prison Sarah Island by eight convicts. Its Gothic narrative plots their privation and descent into cannibalism, through to the execution of the sole survivor, Alexander Pearce, for the murder of Thomas Cox. It was co-written and produced by Nial Fulton.
