Daniel Joseph Lyle (born September 28th 1970) is an American former player of the union rugby who was a member of the United States national rugby union team 45 times between 1994 to 2003. He served in the role of U.S. captain in 24 of those games. Lyle played number eight.

Lyle was married to Rebecca Hansford on December 30 2004 on December 30, 2004 at St John’s Church in Bath, England. They have three sons and live just outside of Boulder, Colorado.

Lyle was inducted into the USA Rugby Hall of Fame on June 4, 2016, in Philadelphia, PA.

He was a member of English team Bath after leaving his former club, the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) during the 1996/2007 season. He played for seven seasons at Bath and was a part of more than 125 games for Bath’s club. He was instrumental in helping them win the Heineken Cup title in 1998 by winning against Brive and also captained the team for the season 2001/2. Lyle made the move with Leicester Tigers in 2003. Lyle was born in Louisville, Kentucky. A 1992 student at the Virginia Military Institute, he began playing rugby at the age of 23 to remain fit.

Lyle was the first player to debut as a player for Lyle’s U.S. national team against Ireland in November 1994 at Lansdowne Road. He was the first captain of his U.S. squad in a match against Japan in June 1996 during the Pacific Rim tournament. He also was the captain of his U.S. sevens team to victory in the bowl contest during the Hong Kong Sevens in 1997. Lyle was captain of the team during the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Lyle played for United States in United States in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and was sacked from international competition in 2003. Through his career with the American national team, Lyle earned 45 caps for his country. He was captain of his team in 24 games, with 11 victories in those games (at the time, it was a record for the most wins in all time by a U.S. captain; that record was overtaken by Todd Clever).

Dan Lyle worked for United World Sports as an Executive Vice President and Tournament Director with USA Sevens LLC from 2006-2016, the owner and operator of the USA Sevens rugby tournament. That tournament is played every year at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, and is the largest commercial rugby tournament in the United States. Dan Lyle left UWS for to become the Director of Rugby for Anschutz Entertainment Group launching AEG Rugby in October 2016.
