On August 1, the 1st of August, 2008 Pithawalla received the distinction of being the first to be awarded either the Param Vir Chakra or the Ashoka Chakra to attain the one-star rank of Brigadier. After being promoted up to Major General status on the 20th of January 2013 He made history as the only Ashoka Chakra recipient to attain the rank of general officer with a two-star rank. As a major general he was appointed The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Andhra Sub Area.
