Gillies was born in Paisley and was raised at Tiverton, Devon. Gillies was signed by Bath Rugby following a trial in April 1994. He played three appearances for the first team in the 1995-96 season. Gillies joined Richmond for the 1997-98 season under at the time Bath Coach Andy Robinson feeling that the club’s decision to sign the Argentinian national German Llanes could prevent Gillies from receiving the necessary amount of game time to fully develop his talents.
