Following the conclusion in his career McPhillips joined All-Ireland League club St Mary’s College in Dublin as a coach and player. He was a scrum half in the loss against Cork Constitution in the 2010 All-Ireland League final and helped St Mary’s College win the 2010 Leinster Senior League title. Following his success with St Mary’s, McPhillips returned to his former club Connacht as the head of analysis via video under the head coach Eric Elwood, his former teammate. He remained in the same position as a coach under Elwood as well as his replacement Pat Lam until the 2015-16 season, when he was appointed an assistant coach for attack coach Andre Bell, though he kept his former position as head analyst. After the resignation of Bell in the year following, McPhillips was promoted to attack coach for the 2016-17 season.
McPhillips played in professional rugby for Connacht from 2003 until 2009, the most memorable game being the European Challenge Cup semi-finals against Harlequins and Sale Sharks. McPhillips scored 11 tries during his debut season at Connacht which made him the leading scorer in the Celtic League for the season. McPhillips had a total of 20 scores within the Celtic League and 12 in the European Challenge Cup, which left him as the top scorer for the team but his record was eclipsed by Fionn Carr. The month of August 2007 he was a as a scrum half for Connacht during the loss against South Africa in a World Cup pre-game friendly match. South Africa went on to win the title of World Cup Champions.
