Col Murphy is an Australian former footballer from the rugby league that played during the 70s as well as 80s. He was a player in the Newtown Jets, North Sydney and the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition.
Murphy later coached for the Western Suburbs reserve grade side in the latter part of the 1990s.
When he joined the club in 1984 Murphy became a member of North Sydney following Newtown were exiled from the premiership for financial issues. Murphy was only able to play in four games for Norths and was then removed for the club to be joined by South Sydney. Murphy played four matches in the scrimmage for Souths in 1985 before retiring after the season.

Murphy was the first player to make his debut as a player for Newtown with a win against South Sydney in 1976. Murphy’s first three seasons saw Newtown finish last in the table in the years 1976 1977, 1978, and 1976. The year 1979 saw Newtown was appointed Warren Ryan as the head coach, who transformed the team from a struggling one and into contenders for the premiership by the year 1981. Murhpy was absent for the majority of the 1981 season , and was disappointed not to make the grand final squad that was defeated by Parramatta.
Murphy played eight times with Newtown in 1983. It was to be the club’s final in the highest level in the top division of Australian the rugby league. Newtown’s last match of the NSWRL premiership was a 9-6 win over The Canberra Raiders at Campbelltown Stadium.
Murphy became the head coach of Newtown in the 1990s as the club was then playing in the Metropolitan Cup now known as the Ron Massey Cup. Murphy guided Newtown to premiership victories in the competition between 1995 and 1997.
