Born on the 1st of October of 1951 from Boise, Idaho, Harper received the bachelor’s degree in journalism as well as English literary studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1973. Harper earned a master’s degree from journalism the following year at Northwestern University.
Harper was the Cairo bureau chief at ABC News in 1981, Harper was fired from the ABC News bureau by Anwar Sadat in the month of September in 1981 because he had interviewed a former reported reporter who was expelled in Beirut.
He left the news business to teach journalism at New York University in 1995 and later at Temple University, where he headed the Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab. He now teaches multiple classes within the journalism department such as Journalism and the Law International Reporting, and Ethics of Journalism.
Harper has edited and written seven books, including one of the first about the digital age and its influence on journalism. The 1998 book, And That’s the Way It Will Be. His 2011 book, Flyover Country, documents the history of his high school graduation class of 1969 from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
As reporter and then the bureau head in Rome from 1981 until in 1986 Harper wrote about the conspiracy in the year 1981 to assassinate Pope John Paul II, 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon as well as in 1983, the bombing at the Marine barracks which killed 241 soldiers and a Navy sailors dead, and an attempted hijacking on TWA Flight 847, for which they had been nominated to receive five Emmy awards.
