Nikolay Tsiskaridze Biography

Nikolay Tsiskaridze is one of the most popular and richest Choreographer who was born on December 31, 1973 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Tsiskaridze was born in Tbilisi, Soviet Georgia in 1973. He began his ballet studies at Tbilisi Ballet School in 1984 and then enrolled in the Moscow Ballet School in 1987 in which he was studying under the direction by Pyotr Pestov. After his graduation in 1992, Tsiskaridze immediately became a part of the company that was the Bolshoi Theatre, then under the direction of Yury Grigorovich. He was elevated to the post of principal in the year 1995. Since since then, Tsiskaridze has performed internationally in a variety of ballet companies around the world as well as those of the Mariinsky Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet. He has also been a part of the overseas performances for the Bolshoi Ballet, “Kings of the Dance” International project. In October 2003, Tsiskaridze was confronted with his first serious injury that could have ended his professional career. It was the catastrophic knee injury he suffered during his performance during his rehearsal at Opera de Paris. Following the first surgery in which doctors replaced the knee ligament the staphylococcus infection was introduced into the body. For a time, he was in serious condition. Through a series of 9 surgeries, doctors were able in saving not just his life, but also his leg too. He finally began to learn to walk. He was on stage following a the interval of nine months.

In October 2013, Tsiskaridze was appointed as an acting Rector of the prestigious Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in Saint Petersburg (est. in 1738), on the order of the Culture Minister. He stopped being “acting” and started to work hard as the full Rector of the institution.

Following months of legal disputes and scandals, Tsiskaridze left the Bolshoi when his contracts (as a premier dancer and as a ballet teacher) expired on 30 June 2013 and the theater’s management decided not to prolong any of them. His relationship with the directors of the theater was rocky long time ago – he openly criticized the theater’s management for soiling the Bolshoi’s repertoire of classics with contemporary works from abroad, for shoddy work during a recent renovation, for favoritism and bad taste. As a result of his endless criticism, Tsiskaridze claimed he and his students were denied roles, docked pay and prevented from advancing their careers.

Tsiskaridze has been awarded numerous awards He became the youngest person ever to be designated as a People’s Artist of Russia (2001). He was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2001 2003) and the Prix Benois de la Danse (1999) silver medal in the Osaka Ballet Competition (1995) Gold Medal during Moscow Ballet Competition (1997), Golden medal at Moscow Ballet Competition (1997) Honoured artist of Russia (1997), Russian Golden Mask theatrical prize (1998 2000, 2001 2003) and the of Honour of Georgia (2003), of Honour of Georgia Republic of Georgia (2003) Danza&Danza Award as the best dancer of 2003, Triumph award (2004) Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the Republique Francaise (2006) and the People’s Artist of North Osetia — Alania Republic (2013) etc.

Nikolay Maximovich Tsiskaridze , PAR (Russian Nikolai Maksimovich TSiskaridze ; Georgian: nikoloz c`iskariz’e Nik’oloz Cisk’aridze) is a Russian-Georgian ballet dancer who was part of the Bolshoi Ballet for 21 years (1992-2013).

In the course of his career as a dancer, he performed more than seventy roles in important classical pieces and ballets created by contemporary choreographers who are well-known. In addition to dancing Tsiskaridze completed his studies in the Pedagogical faculty at the Institute of Choreography in 1996. In 2003, he was teaching every day ballet classes in the Bolshoi Theatre. Additionally, since 2004, he also taught in Moscow Ballet Academy.
