Michael Lewis MacLennan, born June 5, 1968, is a Canadian playwright and television writer. He is best known for his work as a writer/producer of television series like Queer as Folk or Bomb Girls.
After that, he began to study screenwriting at The Canadian Film Centre. However, he continued to write plays. In 1998, he won the Herman Voaden Dramatic Competition for his play The Shooting Stage. He also won the 2001 Herman Voaden Playwrighting Contest for Last Romantics. Both plays were later nominated to the Governor General’s Award in English Drama, The Shooting Stage at 2002 Governor General’s Awards, and Last Romantics at 2003 Governor General’s Awards.
In 2006, he created a theatrical adaptation of Douglas Coupland’s novel Life After God, resulting in Coupland inviting him to write and coproduce the television series adaptation of Coupland’s novel jPod.
He was cocreator and executive producer of Bomb Girls, which premiered in 2011.
In 1995, he premiered his second play, Leaning Over Railings. Grace, which he wrote in 1996, won the Theatre BC National Playwriting Competition. It has been performed across Canada and internationally. He also wrote several short plays of one-act, such as Wake No Clocks, and Come On!

MacLennan was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He began his stage acting career. He was 13 when he got his first role in the theatre. Later, he performed a short performance about his fears. His parents would later see the play and discover that he was gay. In 1986, he moved to Victoria to study English at University of Victoria.
Beat the Sunset was his first play. It premiered at the Victoria Fringe Festival 1993. It was then staged in Vancouver, where it won MacLennan the Jessie Award for outstanding emerging dramatist and Theatrum National Playwriting Contest.
He began his television career as writer and story editor for Sullivan Entertainment’s television series Wind at My Back, Anne of Green Gables: The Animated Series and Super Rupert. He then became a writer and co-executive producer on Queer as Folk, writing 14 episodes over four seasons. Concurrently with the final season of Queer as Folk, he co-created and produced the Citytv dramedy series Godiva’s in 2005.
