Gerardus Johannes “Hans” Wijers, a former Dutch politician and businessman from the Democrats 66 party (D66), was born 11 January 1951. Since 2018, he is the chairman and supervisor of the ING Group.

Hans van Mierlo decided to resign after the cabinet period ended. The party leaders exerted great pressure on the Wijers to step down as party leaders. After the 1998 elections, the second purple cabinet (Cabinet Kook II) was established. Wijers stated that he did not want to be a minister for a second term.

Wijers has been non-executive director at Royal Dutch Shell since January 2009; he later became vice-chairman. He is President of Heineken and supervisory director at HAL Holding NV. He is also chairman of the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Royal Concertgebouw NV. In 2010 he was chairman of the jury of the Libris Literature Prize. In 2013 he was chairman of the National Committee inauguration for King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

Wijers was a civil servant in the ministry for Social Affairs and Labour from 1982 to 1984. Later, he worked at the ministry for Economic Affairs. He became a consultant in management at Horringa & De Koning which was later part of Boston Consulting Group.

Wijers is a member of D66 since 1976. Hans van Mierlo (D66), asked him in 1994 for a post as minister in the Cabinet Kok I. He was the Minister of Economic Affairs and was responsible for the legislation change regarding shop opening hours being extended. The Competition Regulation law was also created, which led to the founding of the Dutch Competition Authority. His ministry saw the March 1996 bankruptcy of Fokker’s aircraft factory. Due to lack of clear future prospects, Wijers withdrew from his role as head of DASA, a German company.

After finishing secondary school at Hogere Burgerschool at HBS-B level, Wijers went on to study Economics at the University of Groningen where he received his Cum Laude degree in 1976. He was an assistant professor at Erasmus University and taught Economics. In 1982, Wijers received a doctorate in Industrial politics: The design of governmental policies for industrial sectors.

In 1999 Wijers picked up his old career as a consultant: he became senior partner and chairman of the Dutch branch of the consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group. In July 2002 he became a member of the Board of Directors of Akzo Nobel NV and on 1 May 2003 he became Chairman of the Board of Directors. He succeeded Kees van Lede. Under his leadership the pharmacy branch of Organon, (Organon BioSciences), was sold in 2007 and the British ICI was acquired. AkzoNobel focused more to paint and chemistry. At the end of April 2012 he decided to resign as chairman of the board. He was succeeded by Ton Büchner.
