Kaufmann was a lover of travel. She would travel from one place to the next frequently, a habit she believed was been handed down from her Circassian grandparents. She was fluent in three different languages: German, English, and French.

Kaufmann continued her career which she had stopped when she was married to Curtis and was most notable for her supporting performances in Rainer Werner Fassbinder film Lili Marleen as well as Lola. She was often associated in tandem with German filmmaker Helmut Dietl, for example in the satirical TV program Monaco Franze – Der ewige Stenz. She was the role of a beautiful tattooist in the iconic film Bagdad Cafe, an offbeat comedy set in a remote motel and truck stop situated in the desert of Mojave. Her last appearance as Aunt Polly was Aunt Polly in the American film Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn (2014) with co-stars Jake T. Austin and Val Kilmer.

The family was raised within Munich, Bavaria, Kaufmann began her career as a ballerina in the Munich Opera. She started her film career at seven years old with The White Horse Inn (1952) and was the leading character for Der Schweigende Engel the same year.
