Christian Genest was born on the 11th of January, 1957 located in Chicoutimi (Quebec, Canada). He studied to become mathematician in the Universite of Quebec in Chicoutimi (B.Sp.Sc. 1977) as well as at the Universite of Montreal (M.Sc. 1978) prior to completing his master’s study in statistical studies at the University of British Columbia (Ph.D. 1983). His dissertation, entitled “Towards a Consensus of Opinion” was completed under the direction of James V. Zidek and was awarded his Pierre Robillard Award from the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) in 1984.

Christian Genest has served the community of mathematics and statistics in a variety of ways. He was, among others, Director of the Institut des sciences mathematiques du Quebec (2012-15) as well as vice president for the Statistical Society of Canada (2007-08) and president of the Association des statisticiennes et statisticiens du Quebec (2005-08). He was on the Statistics Canada Advisory Committee on Statistical Methods for a few years. He also served on the editorial boards of various peer-reviewed journals which include The Canadian Journal of Statistics (1988-2003) as well as The Journal de la Societe francaise de statistique (1999-2008) as well as The Journal of Multivariate Analysis (2003-2015). He was the editor-in-chief of The Canadian Journal of Statistics (1998-2000) as well as guest editor on several special issues and books that included two issues on Insurance: Mathematics and Economics (2005 and 2009). From September 2015 until the end of May, 2019, he served as editor-in-chief for The Journal of Multivariate Analysis. His numerous contributions to the journal earned his an award called the Distinguished Service Award from the Statistical Society of Canada as from 1997.

Christian Genest was the first winner of the CRM-SSC Prize in 1999. He was awarded the SUMMA Research Award from Universite Laval the same year. In 2011 the Statistical Society of Canada awarded the most prestigious award that is that of the Gold Medal, “in recognition of his remarkable contributions to multivariate analysis and nonparametric statistics, notably through the development of models and methods of inference for studying stochastic dependence, synthesizing expert judgments and multi-criteria decision making, as well as for his applications thereof in various fields such as insurance, finance, and hydrology.” Christian Genest is a fellow of the American Statistical Association since 1996 and being a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics since 1997 and an honorary fellow of the Association des statisticiennes et statisticiens du Quebec since 2012. He was made to the rank of a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2015, and also received the Humboldt Research Prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the year 2019.

He was promoted to prof. in the year 1993. He was hired by McGill University (Montreal, QC) in 2010 in which he holds a Canada Research Chair in Stochastic Dependence Modeling.

He is a recipient of the Statistical Society of Canada’s Gold Medal for Research and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2015.
