Chino studied music during his time at Junior High School 65 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. At the age of his teens, Chino had met Orchestra Dee Jay in Brooklyn who later allowed him to join the band as a band member and later, another occasionally coro (chorus) singer. He formed his first group in the Lower East Side, simply known as Chino Rodriguez and his Orchestra from 1968 to 1969, performing at weddings, birthdays and private events. Through the local union of musicians, American Federation of Musicians 802, he got a job performing music for New York City Department of Parks arts program from 1970 to 1974.
