The Wittstock family is of German origin; Charlene’s great-great-grandparents Martin Gottlieb Wittstock and Johanne Luise nee Schonknecht emigrated to South Africa from the Pomeranian village of Zerrenthin in northern Germany in 1861 to escape hardship. Then, in South Africa, the Wittstocks employed as handyworkers, and unsuccessfully searched for diamonds. Gottlieb’s son Heinrich Carl Wittstock married Olive Florence Caldwell from English origin. The son of the couple, Dudley Kenneth Wittstock, Charlene’s paternal grandfather, got married to Sylvia Fagan Nicolson, also from a predominantly English origin. Charlene was issued an acknowledgment in 2014 which proved her Irish family ancestry.
