Caryn Kadavy is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on December 9, 1967 in Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. American figure skater Caryn Kadavy was born December 9, 1967. She was the 1987 World bronze medalist, and she is a four-time U.S. National medalist. She competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics.
She was 6th after the short program at the 1988 Winter Olympics. However, she withdrew before the free skate because of the flu. Kadavy worked alongside Toller Cranston before the 1987-88 season. She had an operation in December 1988 to remove a cyst from her ovary. Due to stress fractures in her ankles and pinched nerves in her other foot, she withdrew from 1989 U.S. Championships.
She was again a strong threat to the title at the 1987 Nationals, particularly with Champion Debi Thomas in injury and in poor condition. (Thomas would actually lose the title in the end to Jill Trenary, Caryn’s training partner). Kadavy placed 3rd in compulsory figures. She then skated a terrible short program that included a major adel drop, which she finished 9th. Caryn managed to climb up to third in the compulsory figures with a respectable performance of free skating. Tiffany Chin’s disastrous long program performance, where she failed even to land a double axel cleanly, cost her a place in the team. She skated well in all three phases of Worlds, including the compulsory figures, short program and long program. This was her best performance to date. In the long program, she lost silver by a narrow margin to Debi Thomas. She might have even won gold if she had not popped a triple toe or double axel in her final stages. She was able to silence many critics and make her a strong contender for the podium at 1988 Calgary Olympics.

Caryn’s first breakthrough was a bronze medal at 1985 U.S Figure Skating Championships. She placed 2nd behind Tiffany Chin, overall winner, but ahead Debi Thomas in long program. She was unable to skate in the short program due to her poor figures. Also, Elaine Zayak, the U.S. figure skating champion, had retired so only 2 spots were available to women from the USA for the Worlds. After having won two international competitions, she was in a strong position to win her first National title. She also won the short program against Tiffany Chin and Debi Thomas. Kadavy, however, was nervous after Thomas’s 5 triple-free skate and she lost the title by a split of 6-3. She won silver and qualified for her first Worlds. She finished 8th in the final, making mistakes in all three phases. This was her first appearance as a nervy, inconsistent competitor.
Kadavy was born in Erie (Pennsylvania). She won four medals at the U.S. Championships as an amateur, including silver in 1986. In 1985, she won the U.S. Olympic Festival and Skate Canada International. She also won the Moscow News Cup. She was a top ten finisher at three World Figure Skating Championships, winning a bronze medal in 1987.
Kadavy went on to skate regularly in professional ice shows throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and is still active as of 2010. She has won numerous professional championships, including Miko Masters (1993), Hershey’s Kisses (1993 and 1994), U.S. Open (1993), Canadian Pro (1996), and Ladies Pro Final (1997), as well as numerous team competitions. She is currently a skating teacher in Erie. As a professional she was heavily praised by Scott Hamilton, Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, amongst others, as showing the complete package of ladies skating, combining strong technical ability for a pro (capable of a triple loop, triple toe, triple salchow, and double axel), strong spins, speed, and wonderful artistry, along with a wider variety of artistic choices and programs than she had displayed as an amateur where she had been known mostly just for a balletic skating style. It was noted by many how she had gained the confidence and consistency as a professional competitor, which had held her back as an amateur.
